Fanorona (pronounced ''Fuh-noorn'') is the national game of Madagascar, and is believed to have been derived from the game of Alquerque, which is an ancient game played in Arab countries. Archeological finds in Egypt suggest that it may go back 3,000 years or more. It is theorized that Alquerque was brought to Madagascar by traders and developed into Fanorona in the 17th century, or perhaps earlier.
The object of the Fanorona is to capture all your opponent's pieces by moving your piece toward or away from a point on which his piece sits. For complete rules, see our Games Rules page.
