Latrunculi (Roman Chess)

Latrunculi was a very popular game in the Roman Empire. The first known mention of it was by the Roman scholar Varro (116-27 BC), but the game is probably much older. Boards varied in the number of squares, but the most common was 12 by 8.

The object is to immobilize your opponent's king by surrounding him on all four sides. For complete rules, see our Games Rules page.

This Latrunculi game comes complete with the 16'' X 11'' board, handcrafted in pine and signed and dated), and two sets of glass playing pieces, each consisting of a king and 12 stones, along with a cloth pouch for the storage of pieces and complete rules. $45
