Backgammon was first played in ancient Sumaria and later spread to Egypt, Greece and Rome. It appeared in China during the Wei dynasty (190-265 AD) and made its way to Japan, Persia, Arabia and elsewhere. The first mention of backgammon in the English language was in 1025 in the ''Codex Exoniensis''.
