Konane (koh-NAH-nay) is a checkers-like game played in Hawaii, the board often being on a slab of lava or rock. There is still an old konane lava rock overlooking the Pacific in Lapakahi Park, on the Hawaiian Big Island. It is an authentically Hawaiian game, consisting of capturing ''men'' for justice and for sacrifice. Holes were gouged out of the board to provide spaces for moving the pieces. Often these holes, particulary the center one (the pika, or navel) were inset with human teeth. There were no set number of holes on a konane board--it varied from 64 to 250. Our game is made with 64 squares. The object is to be the last player able to make a jump. For complete rules, see our Games Rules page. This Konane board has the same number of squares as a standard checkers board, and the board and pieces are also suitable for Go.
This wooden Konane game is handcrafted in pine, and measures 12'' head to tail X 7 1/2'', and comes complete with board, 2 sets of 32 glass stones, a pouch for storage of pieces, and rules. $35
