Tafl is an ancient chess-like game played by the Vikings. We researched and designed this game as the result of a suggestion from an elementary student who'd designed one for a school project!
The distinctive characteristic of the Tafl (meaning ''table'') family of games is that the sides are asymmetrical in that each side has a different objective and a different number of pieces. It simulates a battle between two unequal forces. The object for the king (the large white piece) is to reach one of the corner spaces, where he can escape. He is defended by his soldiers, the eight white pieces. It is the objective of the enemy (the 16 dark pieces) to capture the king. For complete rules, see our Games Rules page.
This wooden Tafl game comes is handcrafted in pine and hand painted, and complete with 11'' square board (signed and dated), all necessary pieces (king and 8 soldiers, and 16 opposing pieces--all individually crafted and hand painted), a cloth pouch for storage of the pieces, and complete rules. $45
